Hamlet Ethan & Julia's kiss turns into desperate betrayal	The House of Mirth Lily & Mr. Seldon, the glove. the talk. a short kiss and she always flees.	Pola X Pierre kisses Lucie - the sweater is over her head. They're both blind to the future and the truth.	Virgin Suicides. Lux sudden jump into the car and ferocious kiss or the 'peach schnopps' make out session.
	honorable mention: Crouching Tiger the young, reckless desert lovers Est-Ouest adulterous lovers after the dance. Sandrine just glows.

Best Love/Sex Scene

Almost Famous "Opie must die!" The Band Aids decide to deflower William.

American Psycho Menage with the mirror. Sick and witty. Bateman loves only himself.

Jesus' Son "pretend its the first time" A rare peek at true emotional intimacy.

Pola X Pierre and Isabelle consummate their maddening love graphically.

Best Action Setpiece

Cast Away The plane crash. Terrifying and realistic feeling as well as emotionally astute.

Crouching Tiger Emotions finally run at fever pitch as two angry women use every weapon in sight.

Crouching Tiger Swaying with swords in the leafy treetops -as graceful as fights get.

What Lies Beneath The bathtub confrontation. Excruciatingly slow but then wham bang scary

X-Men Wolvie Vs Mystique in a blow by blow worthy of panel art. Great kicky comicbook stuff.

Best Musical Moment

Billy Elliott Defiantly auditioning for his father. Billy will knock you out. A perfect absence of dialogue.

Bring It On "Brrrrrr....it's cold in here." Camp pleasure. The cheer faceoff. the Clovers confront the plagiarizing team

Charlie's Angels "Baby Got Back" Natalie (Diaz) gets her Soul Train wish in the comic highlight of the film. Just plain delightful.

Dancer in the Dark "I've Seen It All" so glorious and moving -I felt completely overwhelmed.

Fantasia 2000 Rhapsody In Blue This original number based on Hirshfeld line drawings felt totally inspired.

 

Best Character Intro

Bring It On "Tuh-Tuh-Tuh-Torrance!" Dream sets up backstory and introduces the cheerleaders -Busby Berkeley style. Pure joy!

Jesus' Son Samantha Morton introduced to shimmering and shaking to "Sweet Pea" We got a live one here.

Pola X Catherine Deneuve. How many actors do we recognize just from the back of their glorious head?

Best Opening Sequence

American Psycho Cleansing rituals with Christian Bale's cold precise narrative and mask peeling. "There is no real me."

Beau Travail The sudden kiss out of the darkness, the disco frolic with soldiers...to the shadows in the sand. Hypnotic.

Chicken Run Ginger attempts escape in total homage to great prison movies before the titles come up. A funny and sometime giddy film.

The House of Mirth Lily arriving after the title card in a cloud of smoke. As many critics have pointed out "she's just missed her moment"

Joe Gould's Secret The dialogue on the disenfranchised with evocative 'found footage' of the would be's and never weres...

 

Best Ending *spoilers* (duh!)

Beau Travail French auteurs kick our asses when it comes to the wrap up. Another ambiguous, odd, stunning closing scene.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Wish. Clouds. Mountains. Faith... Like the film, an artful quiet leap into the beyond.

Dancer in the Dark "This is not the last song." Selma's closing monologue of song. She falls -the camera rises.

Jesus' Son Fuckhead (Billy Crudup) walks through the circle touching the residents, reconnecting to life.

Urbania "This is not home" the final walk down a tragic street and the widower alone again in his bed.
