How
did they get nominated?
35%
Surprise attack -they didn't expect her to be this good.
30 % Stardom, hotness & Glamour in real life. 15 % Playing against type convincingly. 12 % The Performance. 7 % Damsel in distress nature of role. 1 % Guilt factor. AMPAS hates the racist charges. |

The name "Judi Dench"
20 % They love actors playing real people. 13 % Miramax backing. 10 % In addition to mental retardation, weight gain, and accents the Academy also repeatedly drools for the terminally ill or afflicted. 7 % The performance. |

How'd
I do on my predictions?
Well,
in January I was 5 for 5 perfect score -even predicting Zelwegger before
the SAG nod. But I so feared the Kidman split that I gave into it. So
my score here is 4/5. Tilda Swinton
didn't score as I predicted she might in the event of a Kidman no-show.
But I still believe she probably missed by a really slim margin. I'm
mostly happy with this line-up as Oscar line-ups go. There's nothing
embarassing here.

Who
Got Robbed?
The
magnificent Charlotte Rampling from
Under the Sand and the indelible Naomi
Watts of Mulholland Drive fame -both of whom more
than deserved shout outs from AMPAS. (They both scored in my Awards)
Who
Might Think About Writing a Speech?
Sissy
Spacek will probably win but it's not as locked up as folks
are saying: The vote count will be tight with Berry
(they could make history by repeating the SAG decision) and
Kidman (they like to crown beautiful limelight-soaked stars)
both right on her lauded tail.
Who
Should Win
Nicole
Kidman -who was not only convincing and iconic in Moulin
Rouge! but managed to swing expertly from slapstick, to singing,
to drama, to high tragedy, to swooning romance all in the same gonzo
film. Like her unjustly ignored co-star Ewan MacGregor, she not only
acted -she embodied the spirit of the film.
Behold Nicole Kidman! She actually deserved her 2001 year long hype-a-thon. |
