'01 FiLM BiTCH Awards

The Winners 2/25/02
(Nominations were posted on 02/09/02)
In honor of the Olympics I'm handing out medals this year instead (also because I like to spread the wealth and if I don't do gold/silver/ bronze than Moulin Rouge! is a clear "sweeper" and I don't normally agree with sweeps... to see awards tally in traditional categories go back to page 2.

Honoring favorite cinematic achievements of 2001. 5 nominees in most categories. Semi Finalists and Finalists refer to achievements that were considered and are well regarded. The choice is often difficult.

Contenders I only think it's fair to show what I've seen. If you're dissappointed in my choices you can't just assume I didn't see something. That's what I always assume about the Academy voters! I don't think they see as many movies as devotees. So if you want a complete list of the 90 or so movies I saw in 2001 you can click here.

Moulin Rouge!

In the Mood for Love
William Chang
Planet of the Apes
Colleen Atwood
Longtime costuming crazy Arianne meets her match in this slip of a girly boy from East Berlin. Brilliance and hilarity.
Risky non-period stylized wear that becomes iconic before your eyes. The clothes themselves seem to be giving real performances. Love it.
In a film bursting with inspired designs this is eye candy at its greatest. The best purely theatrical costume work since Bram Stoker's Dracula
Appropriate to the time period and the evocation of stifled desire. Who'da thunk that Cheung could top that catsuit look from Irma Vep?
Every bit as impressive as the makeup job. (Minus points for covering up Wahlberg's bod, considering that Warren is in a bikini.)

Finalists: The Others * Lord of the Rings
Semi -Finalists: Mulholland Drive * The Man Who Wasn't There * Curse of the Jade Scorpion

Moulin Rouge!
Catherine Martin
The Royal Tenenbaums
David Wasco
For a nightmare city and a you-are-there sense of space.
For bringing Middle Earth and the Shire to glorious life.
For evocative barbershop and noir offices. Gorgeous.
For theatricality, chutzpah, and plain ole creative insanity.
For sets that are like wonderful and clever little dioramas.

Finalists: Hedwig and the Angry Inch -for the trailer that folds out into a stage.
The Others
-all those locked doors and for the 'letting the light in' scene.

Semi Finalists:
* From Hell -for its gothic flamboyance * In the Mood for Love -for tight hallways, restrictive buildings, and overall gorgeousity. * With a Friend Like Harry -the pink bathroom is tops! * Mulholland Drive -so perfect...particular Betty's apartment. Gosford Park -For the set as a character in the film.

A Beautiul Mind
James Horner
Moving and fascinating
Foreboding and mysterious
Originality and brilliance
Playful and pretty
A Beautiful Score

Please see also the Extras for more music awards. The Academy really needs to look at this category. Traditional scoring seems more and more like a minority sport. Most scores today tend to be heavily mixed and matched with songs or previously recorded material with additional new underscoring: Famous examples this year: Moulin Rouge!, The Man Who Wasn't There, The Royal Tenenbaums, and more...

Finalists: Other Notables: The Others -Alejandro Amenabar * Planet of the Apes -Danny Elfman
Semi Finalists:
Sexy Beast -? * Lord of the Rings -Howard Shore * Amelie -Yann Tiersen
Confession: I was smoking crack when I didn't include Amélie in the list of nominees. Having since come to my senses -I am deeply embarassed that I let my feelings for the film get in the way of the joys of the soundtrack. I would trade ABM for that French whimsy fest in this particular category.

Best Ensemble Cast

The Royal Tenenbaums
Sexy Beast
Gosford Park
The Fellowship of the Ring
Together
The iconic faces of the cast and the damaged beauty of the characters seems a perfect bittersweet match.
This terrific cast expertly plays off one another until the subtext of each scene vibrates with resonance.
Robert Altman's who's who of Brit- film cast swiftly sketch a huge array of full-bodied characterizations.
Peter Jackson's film was blessed with the best possible casting -every player vibrantly invokes a magic and gravitas.
Lukas Moodyson and cast work so touchingly together you'd think they did live in a commune after all.

Semi Finalists: Our Song, Moulin Rouge! & The King is Alive
