Winners in Green / Posted on 1/27/02
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assocation throws a little fete every year to honor the movie glitteratti. You'd be insane to miss it. Here are their nominees for Hollywood's liveliest awards party.

Best Picture, Drama

A Beautiful Mind
d. Howard
(Dreamworks)
In the Bedroom
d. Field
(Miramax)
The Lord of the Rings
d. Jackson
(New Line)
The Man Who Wasn't There
d. Coen
(USA Films)
Mulholland Drive
d. Lynch
(Universal Focus)

While they're initial nomination selection seemed quite respectable, The Golden Globes showed distinct lack of imagination while selecting their winner. A Beautiful Mind, the least of these by just about any measure, took home the prize.

Best Picture, Musical or Comedy

Bridget Jones Diary
d. Maguire
(Miramax)
Gosford Park
d. Altman
(USA Films)
Legally Blonde
d. Luketic
(MGM)
Moulin Rouge!
d. Luhrmann
(Fox)
Shrek
d. Adamson & Jenson
(Dreamworks)

While these wouldn't be my five nominee choices -I am 100% behind their winner, the astonishing and exuberant Moulin Rouge! justly won this prize.

Best Foreign Language Film

Amélie
FRANCE
(Miramax)
Behind the Sun
BRAZIL
(Miramax)
Monsoon Wedding
INDIA
(USA Films)
No Man's Land
BOSNIA
(MGM)
Y Tu Mama Tambien
MEXICO
(IFC Films)

The foreign film Oscar race has looked like a match between Amélie and No Man's Land for a month or so. No Man's Land got some extra ammo going into the Oscar balloting weeks with its Globe win. Most of these nominees have enjoyed relatively high international profiles but unfortunately Monsoon Wedding and Y Tu Mama Tambien are not eligible for the Oscar race.

MOULIN ROUGE!

David Lynch
MULHOLLAND DRIVE

Steven Spielberg
A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
(Dreamworks)

A Beautiful Mind and Moulin Rouge! were big winners at the Globes but neither Baz' bohemian spectacle or Howard's bio-pic schmaltz could overtake the desire to honor Altman for his best film in decades. In this particular category, Gosford Park reigned triumphant.

This is just laughable. Akiva Goldsman, widely considered something of a hack is now suddenly award worthy? Even if you consider this a giant step up from his previous scribe efforts it's still just

In a giant birdie to the ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES -The Hollywood Foreign Press Association restored the great "secret love song" ballad "Come What May" to its rightful spot in the best original song game. Now, if only they'd ask Ewan and Nicole to perform it!
