The Predicted 5 Nominees (?)
See the FiLM BiTCH Awards for my personal ballot.
Jim Broadbent
Iris
Ben Kingsley
Sexy Beast
Jon Voight
Ali
Sir Ian McKellen
The Lord of the Rings
Hayden Christensen
Life as a House
Precursor:
NBR, LA, & Globe win. SAG nominee.
Precursor:
Critics awards in abundance. SAG and Globe nom.
Precursor:
BFC and Globe nom. NBR Career Award.
Precursor:
SAG & BAFTA nom
Precursor:
Globe & SAG noms. NBR "Breakthrough"
Final Thoughts:
I hold out an impossible dream that he'll get it for Moulin Rouge!
Final Thoughts:
Has been a lock for this since the film opened. The question is the win?
Final Thoughts:
Career achievement sentiment will place him in this lineup. He's good in it too.
Final Thoughts:
Best Pic nominees usually get one acting nom at least. He's awesome!
Final Thoughts:
The semi annual Young Hollywood spot may just go to Anakin Skywalker.
Strengths:
He's overdue and it's a perfect time to honor him. He had a glorious year.
Weak spot:

This is truly a lead role...not that anyone is going to gripe. The film also seems to have vanished in Oscar buzz.
Strengths:
Since the day the movie has opened he's been labelled the frontrunner for this award.
Weak spot:
What weak spot? About the only conceivable problem is that he's got the earliest release date.
Strengths:
Playing real life 'character' Howard Cossell. The recreations of his interviews with Ali rank as highlights of the film.
Weak spot:

He's buried under annoying hair and makeup to resemble Cossell.

Strengths:
He's a fantastic embodiment of Gandalf and he's a respected actor who should've won 3 years ago.
Weak spot:
New Line screwed up by trying a lead campaign -That slow start could cost him. Hollywood homophobia could also strike again.

Strengths:
Could get the semi regular young star nod? Reviewed well...
Weak spot:

...but hardly reviewed spectacularly. Hype re: his Star Wars role could distract. And that trailer doesn't include anything "Oscar caliber".
The 4 Challengers
Billy Bob Thornton
Bandits
Steve Buscemi
Ghost World
Jude Law
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Jim Broadbent
Moulin Rouge!
Precursor:
NBR joint win (w/ lead roles) Globe nom
Precursor:
NYFCC and NSFC Win. AFI and Globe nom. San Diego's "Body of Work" award.
Precursor:
Globe nom.
Precursor:
NBR winner (shared with Iris) BAFTA nomination.
Final Thoughts:
Could easily best Hayden considering the year he's had.
Final Thoughts:
His Oscar hopes have been overestimated.
Final Thoughts:
He's beaten the odds before -but a gigolo robot role?
Final Thoughts:
AMPAS is so traditional that they'll go with Iris.

Strengths:
He's had a great year with nothing but stellar reviews for everything.
Weak spot:

But the attention he's received has been almost entirely focused on his other two films. This is campaigning as support but it's a lead nominee at the Globes.

Strengths:
The role is sort of uncharacteristic for him which is always a plus and he's the 'best in show'.
Weak spot:

The role isn't showy or Oscar-esque. And the film is small.
Strengths:
Gigolo Joe is a showcase role for his charisma.
Weak spot:
The film isn't well loved and his role may strike some as silly...or even upsetting. Women of the night get nom'ed but not male escorts.
Strengths:
A truly inspired performance. Charles Durning pulled off a musical comedy nod in a year in which he had a more traditional Oscar-y role up. It could happen.
Weak spot:

I can always dream, can't I?
5 Long Shots
Peter Boyle
Monster's Ball
Ethan Hawke
Training Day
Carl Reiner
Oceans 11
Gene Hackman
The Royal Tenenbaums
Tony Shalhoub
The Man Who Wasn't There
Precursor:
None.
Weak spot:

...but how likely is that?
Precursor:
SAG nomination.
Weak spot:

He isn't really a supporting actor. And most of the attention is Denzel's.
Precursor:
None.
Weak spot:

Not much buzz.
Precursor:
AFI Award. NSFC & Globe wins as lead.
Weak spot:
Category confusion. It's difficult to say if the Oscar Voters will follow the lead of Globes or AFI.
Precursor:
AFI nom.
Weak spot:
It's a true supporting role and Oscar prefers co-leads. Most shockingly USA Films is not fully behind him.
