'02 FiLM BiTCH Awards

Winners indicated for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals.
Honoring favorite cinematic achievements of 2002. 5 nominees in most categories. Semi Finalists and Finalists refer to achievements that were considered and are well regarded. The choice is often difficult.
Contenders I only think it's fair to show what I've seen. If you're disappointed in my choices you can't just assume I didn't see something. That's what I always assume about the Academy voters! I don't think they see as many movies as devotees. So if you want a complete list of the 90 or so movies I saw in 2002 you can click here.

Gallic Icon overload! The queens of French cinema gathered for musical ensemble pleasure and comic subversiveness by bad boy auteur Francois Ozon.
A moving ensemble where no one player (thankfully) is scene stealing. The characters are a collective like the city itself. More than the sum of its parts.
With impossible precision this troupe captures both performance style, modern resonance, and archetypes as breathing souls. Perfection.
They achieve a wholly believable family dynamic in their wonderfully cohesive performances. It's as if they have known each other their entire lives.
Campbell Scott is the perfect fast-talking sun around which the others orbit, but, damn everyone is great in this film...under debut director Dylan Kidd.

Finalist: The Hours * White Oleander Semi Finalists: Igby Goes Down * Spider-Man * Talk to Her * About Schmidt * About a Boy * Chicago * Y Tu Mama Tambien * Adaptation

# Breakthrough Award #
Welcome to Hollywierd...Those Who "Arrived" This Year
(winners last year for those paying attention were: Naomi Watts, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Kerry Washington)

Viola Davis
Far From Heaven / Solaris/ Antwone Fisher
Maggie Gyllenhaal
Secretary / Adaptation / 40 Days & 40 Nights / Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
Diego Luna
Y Tu Mama Tambien / Frida
Benoit Magimel
The Piano Teacher
Mary McCormack
Full Frontal / World Traveller
This former Tony winner had important spotlight roles in three of the season's most critical / awards / buzz hot potatoes. She was stellar in all of them. Give her a lead role instantly!
Next Project:
Nothing on her plate right now!!!
Had Hollywood all aflutter this year with her fine lead acting in Secretary. But the truth is she was everywhere all year long onscreen.
Next Project:
Mona Lisa Smile with Roberts and Dunst, and will appear in the new John Sayles film, too.
Co-star Bernal is clearly headed for international superstardom (He was in this category last year) But Luna could get some if he plays his hand right. Careful now...
Next Project:
Dirty Dancing 2 and Kevin Costner's new western, Open Range.
No newcomer but with the Cannes Actor award and the subsequent stateside release of The Piano Teacher, the eyes are now on him.
Next Project:
Claude Chabrol's La Fleur Du Mal with Nathalie Baye and Crimson Rivers 2
Been in the margins too long, Mary. Step on up. With two vivid turns this year in World Traveller and Full Frontal she seems to be just hitting her stride in Cast her quick!
Next Project:
Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (uh oh)

Semi-Finalist: Shefali Shetty -Monsoon Wedding * Jesse Eisenberg -Roger Dodger * -I loved both of them tremendously but how much of a career/buzz they got for their efforts is highly debatable. Still I hope they really break out soon. I'm ready for more.

" Best Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role "
(there are no small parts)

the instant impressionists are

Geraldine Chaplin
as "Katerina Bilova" in
Talk To Her
Toni Collette
as "Kitty" in
The Hours
Viola Davis
as "Eva May Fisher" in
Antwone Fisher
Mary Lynn Rajkoub
as "Elizabeth" in
Punch-Drunk Love
Tilda Swinton
as "Valerie" in
Adaptation
Iconic glamour and sad wisdom as the wary dance instructor who might understand more than she's willing to believe.
Nabbing her big scene away from Moore. A precise and instant characterization.
"You're reading a book?"
Nearly without dialogue but entirely moving, she owns the film as the ex-con welfare mother who abandoned Antwone.
Brining a ball of ferociously funny dont-mess-with-me energy just by walking into frame as Barry's most vocal sister.
Nailing 0-to- 60 Hollywood flattery and matter-of- fact schmoozing in brief vivid scenes. "We think you're great."

# Best Actor in a Limited or Cameo Role #
(there are no small parts)

the quick hitter nominees are...

Barnie Cheng
Hollywood Ending
Brian Cox
Adaptation
Thomas Kretschmann
The Pianist
Bill Pullman
Igby Goes Down
J.K. Simmons
Spider-Man
As the Hollywood indifferent Translator (the one highly original character in the latest Allen comedy) he gives the film its biggest laughs.
John McGee may be Kauffman's nightmare but he's the film's secret weapon. But then, Brian Cox often is when he blesses a film with his presence.
Pitch perfect as the war weary Nazi Capt. Wilm Hosenfeld with a taste for the classics and mercy for Wladyslaw Szpilman.
His unnerving flashbacks as Jason Slocumb combined with his triumph in Broadway's The Goat convinced me that few play unravelling as well.
The comic book iconic role of J. Jonah Jameson fits this actor like a glove. A larger role in the sequel, please. We beg you!

~00o Best Costume Design, Contemporary o00~
the trend-setters are

About a Boy
Joanna Johnston
Monsoon Wedding Arjun Bhasin
Punch-Drunk Love
Mark Bridges
Unfaithful
Ellen Mirojnick
Talk to Her
Sonia Grande
Aiding the characterizations from the boyish man to the hippie mother.
Bonus Points:
Marcus hat and his Mother's coat -peas in a pod.
Gorgeous, colorful, and appropriately class indicating for a multitude of characters.
Bonus Points:

The climax of the film at the wedding, is like an orgy of Indian costumes.
Appropriately minimal but perverse like the film's aesthetic.
Bonus Points:
It's not just the blue suit. It's also the smart two tone ensembles on Emily Watson.
This movie is all about Diane Lane being a goddess. Ensembles amp up her natural beauty.
Bonus Points:
Clothes that look great blowing off in the supernatural wind.
From the dancers sheer dresses to the proud female bullfighter, the costumes are beautiful and emotional.
Bonus Points:
Sunglasses for the comatose.
Finalists: Igby Goes Down -Sarah Edwards -Amanda Peet's coat! * White Oleander -Susie DeSanto -Haughty artists, born again Christians, and Los Angeles druggy actresses. Oh my...
