SAG Nominations are: Bates, Latifah, Moore, Pfeiffer, Zeta-Jones

* A shout out to DAVID POLAND who reminds us of Michelle Pfeiffer's deserved but fading prominence in this race when he says:

"Michelle Pfeiffer Ð I really like White Oleander.Ê Others did not.Ê But I defy anyone to take apart Michelle PfeifferÕs powerful performance as the toughest mother since Joan Crawford.Ê Some have mentioned that her hair looked too good in jail or something, but thatÕs really off the point.Ê Pfeiffer hit it right out of the park in this role, as she usually does when she plays strength instead of weakness, much like the comedian playing dramaÉ she has the chops and rarely gets to play them.Ê A great performance."

Bates's tiny star turn as the mother of the groom, a bohemian 'divorcee' has em rolling in the aisles. She's the only actor in the film capable of taking on 'Jack' and winning a scene.
Her only minus is that it's probably too small a role for the win (it takes the film a long, long time to get to her) and she has won the Oscar already.
Playing Author Susan Orlean (The Orchid Thief) or at the very least a fictional version of her, Streep gets an opportunity to demonstrate her comic skills fused with her spectacular dramatic chops. This nomination would make her the most nominated actor ever... it'll happen.
As Velma Kelly, murderess and celebrity, she seems to be winning the most raves. They say she's the best singer and dancer in the cast. This role is a co-lead on Broadwayand the Globes thought it a lead as well. No matter. The bigger the role the better your chances of winning in this category with the Academy.
Another variation on this year's model
(repressed 50s housewife)and she hypnotizes again.
Weak spot:
The bulk of attention she gets will be for Far From Heaven. Her co-star may be nominated so the Academy may want to spread the wealth a little. Also the role is surprisingly nonverbal and I just have a hunch it'll miss.
Has one of the musicals best numbers ("When You're Good To Mama") as the prison matron, Mama Morton and a high profile Globe nom as a result... Hollywood heavyweights are pushing for her nom.
Weak spot:
Despite the hype, she has only one song in the film version and it isn't a large role. Large enough for the shortlist?
Alternates
Moore and Latifah are not sure things--- just very very likely. If a surprise happens, cross your fingers that's it's the deserving Michelle Pfeiffer.
