Directed by Jim Sheridan based on his own family. Connected performances that feel unusually natural. Their apartment is so large you'll want to move right in.
This now familiar ensemble, led to great unexpected depth by Peter Jackson, still radiates intense "Fellowship" even though they share less communal screentime.
Guests terrific ad-libbing company is at it again. Some new faces shine, other greats are strangely absent. But all are wonderful. This Wind is "blowing equality"
Clint Eastwood's powerhouse thespian collection seep with great fervor into their roles and the milieu. (Apart from Penn) It's hard to pick anyone out; it's a team star turn.
A cast of unknowns without training come naturally to life under the assured observant hand of Peter Sollet. If their apartment weren't so small you'd want to move right in.
Finalists: Shattered Glass-90s offices politics * Master and Commander -Russell & his boys * The Station Agent -a quintet of warm laughs & tears * Semi-Finalists: Girl with a Pearl Earring -17th century home-office politics * Laurel Canyon -uncomfortably intimate quintet * X2: X-Men United -they're having too much fun. Well, some of them are...*

Emma & Sarah Bolger
IN AMERICA
Peter Dinklage
THE STATION AGENT
(& ELF)
Keisha Castle Hughes
WHALE RIDER
Cillian Murphy
28 DAYS LATER (GIRL W/ PEARL EARRING & COLD MOUNTAIN)
Evan Rachel Wood
THIRTEEN
(& THE MISSING)
(Fan Site)
Here's to two complete naturals. Now pray with all your might that they meet a greater movie fate than the one met by the last great child actress, Victoire Thivisol (Ponette).
Next Project:
Nothing on their agenda just yet.
Whether the part was written or for a reg'lar size actor is neither here nor there. He gave a fine dramatic performance and carried this delicately funny indie picture. Let's hope Hollywood takes notice.
Next Project:
Nothing on his plate yet.
Though I was famously cool on the beloved film and her Oscar chances despite the hoopla, it's impossible to deny that more parts will be hers for the taking if she decides to pursue acting. She was memorable in the breakthrough hit.
Next Project:
Star Wars: Episode III
It's hard not to be noticed when your first hit opens with a shot of you stark naked -And you go on to be riveting in the actual film. Following up with two award seeking films? Lucky.
Next Project:
A thriller with Michael Madsen & Christopher Nolan's take on Batman
She already turned heads on the great TV series Once & Again but after Thirteen -- if she doesn't snag a major film career Hollywood is wierder than we ever imagined.
Next Project:
The Upside of Anger w/ Joan Allen and Pretty Persuasion.
Finalist: Rachel Hurd-Wood -Peter Pan -A really terrific debut performance that precious few people seemed to notice. * Semi-Finalists: Max Pirkis -Master and Commander a fine young talent holding the screen even with Crowe and Bettany in the same frame * The entire cast of Raising Victor Vargas -but of course they all need another film to capitalize on this very small but lovely one * Sarah Paulson -Down with Love Proving her comic worth (which she didn't on her own sitcom (?)) by being even funnier than Zellweger, MacGregor, and Hyde-Pierce. If you think that an easy task... Keira Knightley -Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bend it Like Beckham -Probably the very definition of "arriving" with three hits in one year. But so far, though she's enjoyable onscreen, I'm waiting to see something singular about her that would insure continued success. Those three films will provide her with several more opportunities to prove her worth. Good luck, Keira.

Best Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role
there are no small parts

Anna Faris
as "Kelly" in
LOST IN TRANSLATION
Daryl Hannah
as "Elle Driver" in
KILL BILL, Volume 1
Chiaki Kuriyama
as "GoGo Yubari" in
KILL BILL, Volume 1
Natalie Portman
as "Sara" in
COLD MOUNTAIN
Parker Posey
as "Sissy Knox" in
A MIGHTY WIND
A dead on impersonation of a certain ditzy blond superstar whose name is -- oh, no wait. It's not meant to be a specific person. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
[insert

"YOU
CALL
THAT
BEGGING
!?!"
The highest compliment I could pay Portman is that I forgave her for Star Wars instantly and was angry they didn't give her Kidman's part.
One word: Hilarious. (Question: When you have Posey's formidable comic skills on offer and only give her a lousy cameo -isn't that a capital offense?)

Best Actor in a Limited or Cameo Role
there are no small parts

Sonny Chiba
as "Hattori Hanzo" in
KILL BILL, Volume 1
Daniel Cudmore
as "Collossus" in
X2: X-Men United
Gordon Liu
as "Johnny Mo" in
KILL BILL, Volume 1
Tony Randall
as "Theodore Banner" in
DOWN WITH LOVE
Billy Bob Thornton
as "Howard Doyle" in
INTOLERABLE CRUELTY
Lending the deadly combo of wit and gravitas to Tarantino's revenge epic as the legendary swordsmen whose name can stop even the most fearsome in their tracks.
A pervy choice since he basically just runs through a hall shirtless? Maybe. But I tell you -- it's like they opened the comic and Collossus popped out. No joke.
Word has it that Liu, despite a wicked death at the hands of "The Bride" (well he was imposing while he lasted) in Vol. 1 has another role in Vol 2. Yay!
His presence is the cherry on top of this sundae homage to 60s sex comedies --you know the kind in which he had the David Hyde Pierce role originally.
This Coen Bros anti-romantic comedy may be uneven but it positively stands up and says "Howdy!" with great glee when Billy Bob steps on screen for a brief role.

Best Costume Design (Contemporary)
(Please note: I booted Kill Bill over into the main competition. I figure it transcends time-placement.
But that is cheating a bit I know... so if it places here, I guess I have to say goodbye to The Guru.)

the trendsetters are

CHARLIES ANGELS 2: Full Throttle
THE COMPANY
THE GURU
thirteen
A MIGHTY WIND
Like Orlandi with Down with Love, you know this is a dream assignment. Hot stuff.
Beautiful costumes, off stage simplicity, and in one case purposefully gawdy stage wear.
"Grease" lovin' Indian boys, porn starlets, and rich socialites. Funny touches.
Hippie moms, faded actresses, and teen sluts ago-go. Crucial to the characters.
That hilarious slightly 'out-of-touch by a coupla decades' quality abounds. Great fun.
Finalists: Laurel Canyon -Rocker chic and canyon laissez faire * Intolerable Cruelty -check out CZJ's duds. homina homina. Mystic River -authentically drab, but with character personality Legally Blond 2 -Really fun. But we've sort of been there before... lessening the impact. Semi Finalists: Something's Gotta Give -she's a turtleneck kind of gal * Camp -really fun low budget theater laughs *

Best Adapted/Combination/Song Score
the mix & match tape worthy are

CAMP
KILL BILL, Volume 1
LOST IN TRANSLATION
LAUREL CANYON
A MIGHTY WIND
Showtunes! Both original (and used to hilarious effect) and enjoyable schmaltzy new ones.
No explanation required if you happen to have ears. (As much a musical as a revenge flick)
Hip song choices. But what really sells it is the great karaoke numbers. Both funny and moving.
Fine song choices -both original and famous, sexy vocal work, and the righ attitude throughout.
Iisn't it amazing that the songs written by the actors are this good both musically and comedically speaking.

Finalists: Elephant -To quote Annie Lennox: "Beethoven (I love to listen to)" * The Company -Beautiful music. My Funny Valentine is over used... but it ALWAYS works.
