the "how'd they do that?" nominees are

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Spider-Man 2
Exactly the way more filmmakers should use f/x: to enchance and storytell rather than overpower the film
Both of these films justify their nominations under the heading "Most Improved" as well as just being plain old magical in context of the film with fun details and the appropriate "wow" factor when required.
Finalist: Sky Captain -technological advances but often fuzzy * The Incredibles -Pixar just gets better and better * Semi Finalists: The Aviator * Hero * House of Flying Daggers *

Best Make Up
they gave good face

The Aviator
Hellboy
The Passion of the Christ
Fun period hair and makeup work. Plus Hughes's scarring and general freakout creepiness.
Rick Baker is widely reknowned in this field. Hellboy is one of his finest creations.
Uncle! Enough with the floggings. But makeupwise, appropriately gruesome.
Finalist: Dawn of the Dead * Semi Finalists: Kill Bill, Volume 2 * Alexander * Being Julia * Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events * Kinsey *

30 films represented in some way (so far) out of the 93 I saw from 2004.
19 categories ...I leave out Foreign Language since most of those Oscar submissions aren't available to the public and animated films since I only saw two this year (and don't believe in the category to begin with)
