Body of Work

also known as "My Apologies!"
busy actors who i enjoyed this year and wanted to reward elsewhere but couldn't...

Jamie Foxx
for
Collateral & Ray
Topher Grace
for
Win a Date with Tad Hamilton, P.S., In Good Company
Dustin Hoffman
for
Meet the Fockers, I Huckabees, Finding Neverland
Tony Leung
for
Infernal Affairs & Hero

Best Ensemble Cast
they are family

The Aviator
Blanchett,DiCaprio, Alda, Ross, Holm & Reilly
Grand sets and glamourous costumes deserve teeming star-laden casts to fill and enliven them.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Carrey, Winslet, Dunst, Wilkinson, Ruffalo & Wood
Love stories aren't usually generous opportunities for supporting players. This one is lovely that way.
I Huckabees
Law, Wahlberg, Tomlin, Hoffman, Watts
& Huppert
So many types of performers but they all magically cohere in the comedic chaos.
Sideways
Madsen, Giamatti, Haden Church, Oh Burke & Hecht
Wonderfully wrought dialogue exchanges and crystal clear views of all the relationships.
Vera Drake
Staunton, Sheen, Graham, Marsan, Davis & Broadbent
That lived-in feel so familiar from Leigh's work is superbly effective in telling this family's story

Finalists: Closer was a just miss --not because I didn't love the work. But because, all things being equal, I opt for larger casts with more communal work over small casts who are performing duets for this particularly category * Ray has a large cast who, despite being overshadowed by the one-man show aspect, are all fine Semi Finalists: Dogville all of them serving Von Trier's vision * The Bourne Supremacy -Some of the same cast as the first film but all of the characters seem to have something emotionally going on so it's much better * Collateral Though this is mostly the Tom & Jamie show, there's vivid stuff going on in the peripheral cast as well * Maria Full of Grace -Catalina Sandino Moreno was not the only fine performance in this film, naturalistic performances from all.

Breakthrough Award

actors who "arrived" this year, whether through a breakthrough in exposure or a fine debut,
or graduation from tiny roles to the big leagues

Daniel Brühl
in Goodbye Lenin!
Rodrigo De la Serna
in The Motorcycle Diaries
Bryce Dallas Howard
in The Village
Rachel McAdams
in Mean Girls & The Notebook
Catalina Sandino Moreno
in Maria Full of Grace
An engaging performer whose sincerity and openness in his lead work in Goodbye Lenin! gave that film its considerable heart.
next project
three more international productions coming soon
Rodrigo, a TV star in his home country emerged as the talking point of The Motorcycle Diaries despite the presence of the rapidly ascending Gael Garcia Bernal. Loved that Chippi Chippi
next project
unknown
Ron Howard's daughter wow'ed blockbuster crowds in The Village and shocked cinephiles by signing on to Von Trier's Manderlay --taking over for Nicole Kidman. That's quite a coming out party.
next project
Manderlay
Of the new crop of stars, she is burdened by the highest expectations. When someone is gorgeous, funny, and charismatic to the masses -they're always called 'The Next Julia Roberts'!
next project
three film coming in 2005 - she's "in"
Plucked out of acting classes in Bogota to lead Joshua Marston's beautiful first feature, she already has "Oscar nominee" status. The word is that she's being very picky about a follow up which is wise...
next project
unknown

Finalists: Ivan Dobronravov, The Return -a terrific debut. This kid is a natural. But he's very young and were enough people watching? * Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite -Very funny. But what will he do for an encore? * Anthony Mackie, Brother to Brother, Million Dollar Baby, She Hate Me -Given the range of these films and characters, you'd think he would have gotten more attention this year. Does he have "it"? I'm not sold yet but I'm watching. * Semi Finalists: Cameron Bright, Birth, Godsend, The Butterfly Effect -Haley may have worn people out on spooky little kids but he was quite good in Birth and seemed to understand the part (which is spooky enough) * Kett Turton & Sara Rue I'm grouping them together because they had such great chemistry in Gypsy 83 ...but I think that only 4 people saw this movie. * Steve Sandvoss showed promise in the indie gay flick Latter Days *

Best Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role
there are no small parts

Angelina Jolie
as "Capt. Franky Cook" in
Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow
Helen Kim
as "Karen Kim" in
Kill Bill,
Volume 2
Donna Murphy
as "Shop Owner" in
Door in the Floor (and "Rosalie Octavius" in Spider-Man 2)
Lynn Redgrave
as "Final Interview Subject" in
Kinsey
Emma Thompson
as "Professor Trelawney" in
Harry Potter and...
The only real sign of life in this busy but non-eventful event. Love the accent and eyepatch!
Two Annie Oakleys face off. Great scene terrifically played by both actors --they hit the bullseye.
I'm partial to Donna due to Broadway adoration. But she's a lovely presence onscreen as well.
A tiny but much talked about performance. I love a good monologue and so does this actor.
These movies are so jampacked with Brit stars you want all of them to be as fun as Emma makes it.
Finalists: Oksana Akinsha -The Bourne Supremacy [Watching her I'm like E.T. pointing to his heart "ouch" ]* Jean Smart -Garden State & I ♥ Huckabees -she's always vivid, so how come no larger roles? Come on Hollywood. Think what she could do with a big part. Semi-Finalists: Caroline OConnor (a former winner in this category for Moulin Rouge!) belts as Ethel Merman in De-Lovely * Jane Adams -Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind * Shondrella Avery as LaFawnduh Napoleon Dynamite is "sweet" * Franka Potente -The Bourne Supremacy (the only thing I hate about this movie is the way it begins. Damn them!)

Best Actor in a Limited or Cameo Role
there are no small parts

Javier Bardem
as "Felix" in
Collateral
John Barrowman
as a musical performer in
De-Lovely
Javier Cámara
as "Paquito" in
Bad Education
Michael Gambon
as "Jimmy" in
Being Julia
Gordon Liu
as "Pei Mei" in
Kill Bill, Vol.2
A tiny knockout performance. And soooo different from his work in The Sea Inside.
Beautified the highlight of the film (for me); a gorgeous rehearsal of "Night and Day"
Hilarious. His introduction of Zahara (with request for applause) is priceless.
Witty and commanding as the interjecting ghost of Julia's acting mentor.
His "cruel tutelage" was a highlight of the second volume. Memorably outlandish.
Finalist: Dylan Baker is spot on in both Spider-Man 2 and Kinsey (Can't wait for Spider-Man 3 wherein he'll have a much larger role) Semi-Finalist: Richard Jenkins Hilariously put out by unexpected guests at his dinner table in I ♥ Huckabees *

Best Costume Design (Contemporary)
the trendsetters are

Beatriz Aruna Paztor
Alfie
Mark Bridges
I ♥ Huckabees
Jeffrey Kurland
Collateral
Kumiko Ogawa & Catherine Marie Thomas
Kill Bill, Vol. 2
Milena Canonero
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Everyone in this movie looks divine. Paztor (who also costumed Vanity Fair) had a good year.
One of my favorite designers, here doing playful movie-appropriate work. I especially dug Tomlin's ensembles
Collateral is embarassingly rich in all of its aesthetic efforts. Love that sleek suit for silver-fox Cruise.
Cleaving these films in half didn't do its tech crew any favors in terms of recognition... but this is fine work.
Anderson's films are filled w/ blissfully odd and idio-syncratic design elements. Canonero always delivers.
Finalists: John A Dunn Birth -mostly for that champagne dress on Kidman* Ann Roth Closer -memorable work -but what was with Julia's opera outfit? Semi Finalists: Melissa Toth -Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind * Kitty Boots Gypsy 83

Best Adapted/Combination/Song Score

the mix & match tape worthy are

De-Lovely
Garden State
Kill Bill Volume 2
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Ray
Cole Porter adapted for and interpreted by rock and musical theater stars.
The soundtrack for "hipsters" -self-consciously so, but, whatever.
Not as mind-blowing at the first Volume, but equally suited to the film it enhances.
Delights from Mark Mothersbaugh plus the masterstroke of Bowie in Portugese
Craig Armstrong underscoring and a plethora of Charles' classics. Beautiful.
