Best
Moment: Meryl Streep's naughty joking: "Congratulations,
Natalie!" Meryl is always so funny.
Best Dressed Male: Ewan MacGregor (didn't think
it was possible for him to get more handsome -but he did)
Best Dressed Female: Uma Thurman, who recovered
from that last fashion debacle with a flawless look.
Best Speech: (tie) Teri Hatcher, Desperate
Housewives and the creator of Desperate Housewives.
Weirdest Speech: Annette Bening, but she still
better win that freaking Oscar.
Worst Dressed: Paula Abdul, Lisa Marie Pressley,
and Diane Kruger were all totally nightmarish.

Hmmmm. Sideways continued its winning streak. But none of the actors were honored, so it didn't feel like such a triumph. So, is this The Aviator's real competition or is it Million Dollar Baby.Pre-Ceremony Comments
It would be a shocker if they move off of the Sideways track, but the Globes have been known for wildcards --so my spoiler guess is The Incredibles should Sideways suffer its first real loss. Although I'm really hoping for Eternal Sunshine to finally win something, I must say.
Nomination Comments
All the major contenders made it here. Conventional Globe wisdom says The Phantom takes this. Conventional Oscar wisdom says it's all about Ray. And current buzz and nomination tally says this is Sideways to lose. And, all that said Eternal Sunshine and The Incredibles are totally deserving. The most exciting race of the night.
Prediction Comments: (I scored 5/5)
I can't imagine the GG musical/comedy noms announcing without Sideways, Ray, Phantom, Eternal Sunshine, and The Incredibles as nominees. What's the problem with that? The Problem is that's all five slots. When do the Globes ever announce without shaking things up a bit?Complicating the matter considerably is that for the first time in a very very long time this category is actually more competitive than Best Drama. It wouldn't surprise me to see a major upset nom.
Among the other contenders in alpha order: Beyond the Sea, Mean Girls, Shrek 2, and Spanglish. This is indeed THE category to watch at the Globes. If any of the four Live-Action nominee predictions I listed or Spanglish misses it's like screaming "goodbye Oscar!!!" in a hysteric outburst.
What I'm predicting: Eternal Sunshine, The Incredibles, Phantom, Ray, Sideways
What I hope to see that's sort of plausible: Mean Girls in an upset nomination --so long as it's not Eternal Sunshine or Sideways that it boots out.
What I'd really love to see? A real surprise like Ray or Phantom shut-out.

Comments (Prediction incorrect)
I felt that this could basically go in any direction. With the need to "predict" the Oscar out of the way (we all know who's going to get it) the Globe voters would be free to pick whomever they most loved. This year that was Leonardo DiCaprio in his intense work as nutty Howard Hughes. Don Cheadle sure got a lot of applause though indicating that he's possibly more widely loved than was known.
best dressed? It's between Leo (with classic awards show look) or Cheadle's black on black on black suit. Depp took one of those fashion risks we love him for... but this time it didn't pay off.
Pre-Ceremony Comments
With the Oscar frontrunner in the other category this race will be very very interesting. My heart hopes for Liam Neeson. My brain says (given Globe tendencies) Johnny Depp. So, it's Johnny Depp as my prediction. If it's not Depp, I'm assuming its DiCaprio.
Nomination Comments
In a very contested Best Actor race, it's the men playing real life characters who prevailed with the Globes. All five nominees play real life famous men. Leonardo Dicaprio as Howard Hughes, Liam Neeson as Alfred Kinsey, Johnny Depp as JM Barrie, Javier Bardem as Ramon Sampredo, and Don Cheadles as ...er -the name escapes me. Only Jesus (Jim Caviezel) and Che Guevera (Bernal) once lived and are now shunned. Snubbed? Anyone who went the fictional route: Tom Cruise, Jeff Bridges, Clint Eastwood, and Kevin Bacon. Oscar effect? Maybe the death of Jeff Bridges chances --and that sucks to no end since his performance is better than any of the men listed. Definitely the death of Cruise's chances --if The Globes don't go for Cruise (they almost always do), you know he has no shot at Oscar whatsoever.
Prediction Comments : (I scored 3/5)
Ugh. This has to be THE hardest category to predict. Last year in Best Actress Drama when there was no consensus.......the Globes REALLY shook things up. Same thing could happen here this year for the men. Complicating the matter considerably is that some of the major Oscar contenders are over in Musical/Comedy this year. This is a total crapshoot guess.Among the 11 contenders that I see as quite possible I'm choosing: Cruise, DiCaprio, Neeson, Eastwood, and Depp. But honestly, it could go any number of ways. The Globes like big stars and they don't often go foreign so they might go with Tom Cruise instead of Javier Bardem--or they might not since DiCaprio and Depp could fill their "nab the most viewers" notions. Other possibilities? Hearing Don Cheadle, Kevin Bacon or Jeff Bridges wouldn't surprise me at all. Bigger surprises but still possible? Jim Caviezel or Gael Garcia Bernal

As predicted throughout the known universe Jamie Foxx won. His lengthy but heartfelt acceptance speech cemented his Oscar win 6 weeks from now.
best dressed? That'd be... hmmm, All five were pretty well turned out at this awards show. So, the edge goes to Foxx because the winner always glows more. Unfair but true.Pre-Ceremony Comments
The only thing more shocking than Jamie Foxx losing would be...would be... damn, can't think of anything. It would be catastrophically shocking.
Nomination comments
Three musical bios made the grade for their leading men. Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles, Kevin Kline as Cole Porter, and Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darrin. The only fictional etnries: Paul Giamatti in nomination leader Sideways and Jim Carrey (thank god someone finally recognized his best work ever) in Eteranl Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Oscar effects? Not much --though the lack of The Phantom might be telling.
Prediction Comments: (I scored 4/5)
This seems pretty easy: Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Jim Carrey are all in Best Picture hopefuls and have acclaim. Kevin Spacey well... the Globes love --they even nominated him for The Shipping News. Bill Murray should restore fond memories of his hilarious acceptance speech last year. The spoilers? Sandler, Law, or Butler
Best Actress Drama
Comments (prediction correct)
As expected Hilary Swank walked away with this. I don't much like it --Thought it was only the fourth best of this competition, trailed only be Johansson. But what are you gonna do. The media (of which the Globe giving HFPA is a part) wanted a rematch of Swank Vs. Bening and the media wants what the media gets.best dressed? I have to subtract points from Swank for wearing the exact same color dress as her Oscar win from 1999. Kidman looked great --folks complained about the feathers but I thought she looked elegent and unique. But the real winner fashion wise was Uma Thurman who had one of the best dresses of the night and also has flawless hair and makeup. She looked unreal. Too bad she didn't win so that audiences could have gasped more at the heavenly vision.
Pre-Ceremony Comments
I assume that Hilary Swank will walk away with this one. But I am not the least bit happy about it. The spoiler is probably Staunton. The welcome surprise (that would not entirely surprise me) would be Thurman.
Nomination comments:
Hilary Swank and Imelda Staunton were gimmes... And Uma Thurman leftover love from last year is not a real surprise. But the presence of last year's double nominee Scarlett Johansson and the one and only Nicole Kidman only serves to remind that the Globes are nothing if not consistent in their love of certain leading ladies. Oscar effects? A big boost for Thurman who has a weak campaign (Damn Miramax!) and a major obstacle for Catalina Sandino Moreno, Laura Dern, and Julie Delpy --who all needed this exposure and didn't get it.Prediction Comments : (I scored 3/5)
I was going to go out on a limb here and say that they'd throw both Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts in as Closer leads (like they did with Chicago's gals in the musical comedy realm) --but apparently the HFPA officially accepted the supporting tag for Natalie. So, I'll throw Uma in there for a repeat. Add to that Hilary Swank and Imelda Staunton as Oscar sure things. That leaves one slot open...I'm thinking the young and beautiful and talented Catalina Sandino Moreno makes her first real Oscar play here by landing a nomination at the Globes. Thereby shutting out Laura Dern, and Julie Delpy --people will say I'm leaving out Audrey Tatou and Scarlett Johansson and well, I am. I'm not feeling it.

Comments (prediction correct)
Annette Bening Hooray!!! Some people objected to her acceptance speech (which was a little odd and robotic) but truly bad acceptance speeches certainly didn't hurt Jennifer Connelly a couple of years ago so hopefully Bening can knock Swank out at the Oscars in the first round. (Lord knows her performance is more accomplished and her character more difficult to play)
best dressed: I never really got a good look at Winslet's dress. The others played it so safe. It's a draw between Bening, classy in black, and Rossum, pretty in white.
Pre-Ceremony Comments
My heart has a hard time imagining Annette Bening losing this one. But the Globes can be surprising, so it wouldn't be shocking theoretically to hear Kate Winslet or even Emmy Rossum's name called. Just not Renée for a fourth time, please.
Nomination comments:
Annette Bening, Kate Winslet, and Emmy Rossum were obvious and impossible to live without choices for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The major shock is Ashley Judd as Mrs. Cole Porter. Who saw that coming? Then of course there's Renée Zellweger. Again. (which you'll notice I was dreading during my predictions) Can't we have even one awards show without the aneroxic one. You'd think three Golden Globes, one Oscar, and one SAG award would be enough for any 4 year period. But no, Apparently they can't live without her. Damn them! And at the expense of the party girl of 2004 (Lindsay Lohan) no less. Oh, I hurt! Oscar effects? Announcing the total and gruesome death of Spanglish. Do not slow down to look... it's ugly.MY PREDICTION COMMENTS: (I scored 3/5)
Ah, the more exciting Actress race! Annette Bening and Emmy Rossum seem certain. Add in Kate Winslet for critical acclaim and you have two spots remaining. Lindsay Lohan is a risky guess but I want it to happen and she's been all over the media for months on end. That'd be so fetch!Despite negative buzz on The Life Aquatic I'm throwing in Cate Blanchett for the last spot. But, let's face it. That last slot could go literally anywhere: Possible rivals include: Paz Vega & Tea Leoni from Spanglish (which is flailing now that screenings are started). Still more to draw from? Sigourney Weaver And there's always the (good) chance that the Globes voters will fall back to one of three of their favorite performners: Reese Witherspoon for Vanity Fair or Jennifer Garner for 13 Going on 30, and Renee Zellweger (yet again) as Bridget Jones, sigh...
