MARTIN SCORSESE THE AVIATORPost-Ceremony Comments
Eastwood won it. So now I have to do some more thinking about this Oscar race. Zzzzzz.Pre-Ceremony Comments
Marty should be able to snag this one easy. If he doesn't, we'll have to reassess the Oscar race.
Nomination Comments
I predicted 4 of 5 (Eastwood, Moore, Nichols, Scorsese, Payne) missing only Forster, whom I didn't even have as an alternate. Yikes. Did not see that coming. I still remain confident that he'll be an Oscar no show considering his fairly newbie status and the other non Globe recognized contenders who have more impressive / lengthier filmographies. I predict the winner here will be Scorsese. Oscar effect? This is your Oscar lineup minus Forster and possibly (though I wouldn't bank on it) minus Nichols. The fight over that last spot or those last two spots could go anywhere if this is the end of Closer's run.
Best Supporting Actor
DAVID CARRADINE KILL BILL VOL. 2
THOMAS HADEN CHURCH SIDEWAYS
JAMIE FOXX COLLATERAL
MORGAN FREEMAN MILLION DOLLAR BABY
CLIVE OWEN CLOSERPost-Ceremony Comments
My risky prediction of Clive Owen paid off. And it's a well deserved win as he is beyond terrific in Closer. Who will win this Oscar? It's so fuzzy right now. A real three horse race. We love those.
Pre-Ceremony Comments
I was going to stick with my nomination day thoughts that Morgan Freeman will take this. He hasn't won much yet so the Oscar play should start here. However, I'm not at all certain. So, I'm going to take a real risk and say that the Globes throw Clive Owen a surprise bone (if Morgan is not be their thing it will be Church interruptus)
Nomination Comments
i predicted 4/5 David Carradine, Freddie Highmore, Clive Owen, Thomas Haden Church, Morgan Freeman,
I didn't see the Jamie Foxx category fraud coming. And, why lie? Did he really need 3 nominations in one year? Did the Globes mistake him for Renée Zellweger or something whom they also love beyond what's sane and proper? I sincerely hope that the actors in the Academy reject this fraudulent categorization. It makes everyone look stupid and it is genuinely unfair to other actors who worked their asses off in supporting roles and don't have those cushy lead actor A list salaries and other opportunities (as Foxx has) for nominations in other categories. My prediction is that Morgan Freeman wins this. Oscar effect? Hard to say... definitely good news for Carradine though who needed this exposure.
Best Supporting Actress
CATE BLANCHETT THE AVIATOR
LAURA LINNEY KINSEY
VIRGINIA MADSEN SIDEWAYS
NATALIE PORTMAN CLOSER
MERYL STREEP THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATEPost-Ceremony Comments
My spoiler guess of Natalie Portman was a good hunch. Like the supporting actor race this one seems really up in the air. People (including myself) keep saying Blanchett will win each contest but she never does. So who is this between? Best Dressed in this line up? Cate Blanchett though I wish with all my heart that she would eat something. Otherwise Meryl Streep (believe it or not)Pre-Ceremony Comments
This should be interesting. So far Oscar looks like a tight threeway race between Linney, Madsen, & Blanchett. Whoever wins this will also snag the Oscar I think. My guess is that it's Blanchett. But, the surprise I'd really like to see at the Globes is (spoiler: Portman). It's the type of thing the HFPA would have done in their earlier wilder days.
Nomination Comments
i predicted 4/5 Kate Winslet, Laura Linney, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Virginia Madsen
The Globes love Streep even more than the Oscars if that's humanly possible. Too bad she totally doesn't deserve it this year. My prediction is that Natalie Portman wins this... but I don't know why that's my prediction. Just a guess. You can make a case for any of these performers winning at the Globes. Oscar effect? Well... this basically cements the lineup (since 4 of these 5 were already super likely to make it) That leaves possibly only Streeps slot to be fought over. But I wouldn't want to be the other actresses once Streep is officially in the game. Yikes.
Best Screenplay
CHARLIE KAUFMAN ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
JOHN LOGAN THE AVIATOR
DAVID MAGEE FINDING NEVERLAND
PATRICK MARBER CLOSER
ALEXANDER PAYNE & JIM TAYLOR SIDEWAYSPost-Ceremony Comments
Sideways is probably as locked up for the Screenplay Oscar as The Incredibles is for animated Feature or Jamie Foxx is for Best Actor.
Pre-Ceremony Comments
This is obviously Sideways's prize to lose. Spoiler I'd like to see: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But it's Sideways here. Moving on...
Nomination Comments
I predicted 2 of 5 (ouch) Eternal Sunshine, The Incredibles, Kinsey, Million Dollar Baby, Sideways
major snub: Kinsey my prediction for the win? Sideways. Oscar effect? Oscar has two separate categories for this award so this helps all of these nominees to make it in their respective categories be they original (Eternal Sunshine, The Aviator) or Adapted (Closer, Neverland, Sideways)
Best Original Score
CLINT EASTWOOD MILLION DOLLAR BABY
JAN A.P. KACZMAREK FINDING NEVERLAND
ROLFE KENT SIDEWAYS
HOWARD SHORE THE AVIATOR
HANS ZIMMER SPANGLISHPost-Ceremony Comments
Howard Shore's score for The Aviator won. But it won't be in the Oscar lineup.Pre-Ceremony Comments
This category @ the Globes doesn't mean much in the overall scheme of things (why do they have the music categories and none of the other minor categories... I've always wondered that) I have no idea who will win this so I'm just going to guess and say Finding Neverland.
Nomination Comments
my predictions 3/5 The Aviator, Finding Neverland, The Incredibles, The Motorcycle Diaries, Sideways. Considering the Globe choices (they're all kind of like "huh????" and obviously based on reaction to the movies rather than the scores) I'm glad to remind that the Oscar effect of this is minimum since the two awards entities don't usually agree on a lineup in this category. Good thing since I can think of 12 other scores instantly that are better than any of these (barring The Aviator and Baby which I haven't heard)
Best Original Song
ACCIDENTALLY IN LOVE” SHREK 2
BELIEVE” THE POLAR EXPRESS
“LEARN TO BE LONELY” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
“MILLION VOICES” HOTEL RWANDA
“OLD HABITS DIE HARD” ALFIEPre-Ceremony Comments
The most typical thing would be the Alfie song. But let's just say they choose Million Voices instead.
Nomination Comments
my predictions 3/5 Alfie, House of Flying Daggers, Phantom, The Polar Express, The Polar Express
Oscar effect this will probably be the same lineup at Oscar. Though I could see "Lovers" from House of Flying Daggers disrupting the party. Maybe.
Best Foreign Film
THE CHORUS (LES CHORISTES) (FRANCE)
HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (CHINA)
THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES (BRAZIL)
THE SEA INSIDE (SPAIN)
A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT (FRANCE)Post-Ceremony Comments
The Sea Inside zzzzzzzzz
Pre-Ceremony Comments
The BFCA went with The Sea Inside which is the most Oscary (in the traditional sense) so since I messed up there prediction wise, I'll switch course and say The Sea Inside (zzzzzz). But I'm hoping its House of Flying Daggers for the Globe.MY PREDICTION COMMENTS: (I scored 4/5)
Les Choristes, Der Untergang, House of Flying Daggers, The Motorcycle Diaries, The Sea Inside
alt: Maria Full of Grace, Brothers, A Very Long Engagement, The Passion, Machuca,
Oh, who the hell knows what they watched in this category....
