AWARDS ANNOUNCED
COMMENTARY BELOW.

Best Picture
1. GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK
Dir. George Clooney
Warner Independent Pictures
rest of the top ten
(alpha order this year):
Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash,
A History of Violence, Match Point, Memoirs of a Geisha, Munich, Syriana
, and Walk the Line

post announcement comments: I correctly guessed 70% of the list. And was right to assume that the NBR's reluctance to complelky give it up for Focus Features year after year would keep Brokeback out of the top placement. Woody Allen's Cannes sensation gets its first real boost of precursor season here too. Good Night, and Good Luck is looking as strong as ever for its BP bid with Oscar. Snubs? Cinderella Man and King Kong get the cold shoulder.

my predictions:
We know that the NBR likes sexually controversial stuff. But they don't love Focus Features --which makes Brokeback Mountain a hard read. In the past few years the highest Focus placement has been #4. The bottom half of the NBR top 10 list is where you'll usually find the main Focus pushes (LiT, FFH, Pianist, etc...). The NBR also love Miramax who often take first prize and often have more than one film -one year even five! in the top ten. But Miramax is not the same old Miramax. Will the NBR transfer the love to the Weinstein Co? They also usually give a major award to a film opening right around the time they're announcing (past lucky synchronous films were Last Samurai, Closer, In the Bedroom) which is good news for Memoirs, Brokeback Mountain, Syriana, or Mrs Henderon Presents.

Where will the love go?

(top half of the list) Memoirs of a Geisha (Columbia) (#1) , Walk the Line (Fox) (#2) , Capote (SPC)#3, Munich (Universal) #4 , Goodnight and Good Luck (Warner Indie) #5
(bottom half of the list)
Brokeback Mountain (Focus) #6,Mrs Henderson Presents (Weinstein), #7, Crash (Lions Gate)#8 Cinderella Man (Universal) #9, The Family Stone (Fox), #10
alternates: Just about everything but especially: The Constant Gardener & Pride & Prejudice (Focus), A History of Violence & The New World (New Line), Match Point (Dreamworks)

 Best Documentary

March of the Penguins

runners up
(alpha order):
Ballets Russes, Grizzly Man, Mad Hot Ballroom, and Murderball

post announcement comments: Those cute penguins have too much mainstream appeal to be thwarted in their run for an Oscar. I was 80% correct on my guesswork.

my predictions: I'll say March of Penguins because it's ubiquitous. But also Murderball, Grizzly Man, Enron, and Mad Hot Ballroom

Best Director
Best Actress
Best Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Ang Lee
Brokeback Mountain
Felicity Huffman
Transamerica
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Capote
Gong Li
Memoirs of a Geisha
Jake Gyllenhaal
Brokeback Mountain

comments:
He's in like a bullet for Oscar's race. (and my alternate predix here) But I still think Clooney will end up with the Oscar due to their obvious enduring preference for Actor/Directors.

my predictions:
One of their most bizarre categories year after yar. They rarely go with someone who is going to be Oscar nominated --seriously. They haven't for years now. I'm guessing Ron Howard for Cinderella Man. My alternates are Stephen Frears (Mrs Henderson) and finallyAng Lee (Brokeback Mountain) in case they decide to not be bizarre for once here:

comments:
Sing out Louise: "You gotta have a gimmick if you wanna get applause"

(my alternate prediction)

my predictions:
Reese Witherspoon
for Walk the Line They like "Bodies of Work" so my first alternate is Joan Allen (Upside of Anger & Yes) and then I guess Felicity Huffman (Transamerica).

comments:
Looking like a sweeper now after 3 days of constant wins. Too bad really because in a category this good, it's a shame to only see one name repeated.

my predictions:
They like "Bodies of Work" so I'm guessing Heath Ledger for Brokeback Mountain & Casanova. My alternates are Ralph Fiennes (Constant Gardener & White Countess) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Capote)
I also want to say Jeff Daniels (Squid and Whale) even though I only have 3 guesses damnit.

comments:
Knew she'd turn up eventually. Just didn't see it happening with the NBR

my predictions:
I can't really see a pattern here so lets just try left field wins for an older woman (why not? it's all random guesswork anyway...) Shirley Maclaine (In her Shoes) or Frances McDormand for North Country or Lynn Cohen (Munich)

comments:
Yum.

my predictions:
In supporting actor they seem to think like the Academy (their winner is usually nominated) so I'm going with Bob Hoskins for Mrs Henderson. My alternates are Matt Dillon (Crash) or Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man )

Best Foreign Language Film
Paradise Now
Runners-Up (Alpha Order this Year):

2046
Balzac and the Litle Chinese Seamstress
Downfall
Walk on Water

comments: 60% correct on my predictions here. Not bad. And 2046 continues to come on strong. Can we hope for a technical nod or two with Oscar?.
my predictions: They usually go for high profile films but this year hasn't had that many high profile foreign films so let's just say 2046, Tsotsi, Brothers, Paradise Now, Walk on Water alt: Kings and Queen, Oldboy, Duck Season, or 3 Iron, The Beat that My Heart Skipped, The War Within
Best Original Screenplay
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Production Design
Best Animated Feature
Best Ensemble Acting
The Squid and the Whale
Noah Baumbach
Syriana
Stephen Gaghan

Can't wait to see this. My alternate pick.

prediction:
I'm thinking Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice) but it could be someone who hasn't already broken through like Q'Oiranka Kilcher (New World) or Amy Adams (Junebug)
comments:
Good choice. My alternate pick.

prediction:

I'm thinking Cillian Murphy (Breakfast on Pluto) but they tend to bend the rules anyway they like in this category. Alternates: Terrance Howard (Crash & Hustle & Flow) or Jessie Eisenberg (Squid and Whale)
comments:
Didn't see this one coming. Them NBR folks is sneaky.

prediction:

I'm thinking Bennet Miller (Capote) but it could be Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice) or Miranda July Me You and Everyone We Know
comments:
YAY! love me my Fonda.

prediction:

Who knows? Let's guess either David Cronenberg, Judi Dench, or Shirley Maclaine
comments:
Well. This award I'd predicted below wasn't given this year but this is the closest one to it.

prediction:

This prize is usually for a multi hyphenate person so I'm guessing the writing, directing and acting of George Clooney in Goodnight and Good Luck

Freedom of Expression Awards
Everson Award for Film History
Producers Award
Innocent Voices and The Untold Story of Emmettt Louis Till
George Feltenstein
Saul Zaentz
Comment: Went less Hollywood here than I was expecting. Good for them.

Guess:
Syriana, Constant Gardener, Brokeback Mountain
Career Achievement in Film Music Composition
Outstanding Achievement in Special Effects
They went with Howard Shore who this year scored A History of Violence and was booted from King Kong.
King Kong
(it's only mention with the NBR)
Guess: Williams for Memoirs of a Geisha (unless it is #1 film) than either Brokeback Mountain for Santaolalla or Danny Elfman (Corpse & Charlie...)
Special Mention for Excellence in Filmmaking
Breakfast on Pluto Cape of Good Hope The Dying Gaul Everything is Illuminated Hustle & Flow
Junebug Layer Cake Lord of War Nine Lives The Thing About My Folks
The Upside of Anger Comments: A simply bizarre list. One never knows with the NBR. I correctly guessed only 4 of their 11 (though I had 15 guesses since they normally name more films than this.

predictions: My 15 guesses (this is kind of their indie category thought they cheat a bit): A History of Violence, Junebug, Squid and the Whale, Me You & Everyone We Know, My Summer of Love, Happy Endings, Mysterious Skin, Hustle & Flow, Broken Flowers, The Dying Gaul, Three Burials, Nine Lives, The War Within, Thumbsucker, 40 Shades of Blue
alt: Brick, Beautiful Country, Heights, Transamerica

and IF they don't make the standard top 10 then: Capote and Goodnight and Good Luck
