Best DIRECTOR
Clint Eastwood Flags of Our Fathers Clint Eastwood
Letters From Iwo Jima Stephen Frears The Queen Innaritu
Babel Martin Scorsese The Departed
Post-Show
Martin Scorsese takes his second Globe win. I've been hesistant to state, point blank, that he'll win the Oscar just because it has seemed so pointless after all these years but if he doesn't, I don't know what I will do this time. Don't we all need them to so we can move on from this annual question.
Pre-Show Comments
Martin Scorsese can look forward to his second Globe win. I would be shocked if anyone else could pull it off.Post Nomination Comments
Exhibit D or M --I’ve lost track --in this year’s case against the Cult of Clint, threatening to render all year end awards races in the same colors as all others. He’s totally prolific and he’ll get nominated even if they don’t really like the movie (notice Flags of Our Fathers has no other nominations) It’s like when the BFCA gave the same movie raves –its Eastwood duh –and then didn’t include it in their top ten list, even though they said they liked it more than others in the list. Argh! Ass kissers.Snubs: Eastwood’s twofer (despite having no films in their ten wide best picture list –Letters is in the foreign category) comes at the expense of Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) primarily, suffering from that typical 'musicals don’t need directors' complex that plagues awards shows. This also hurts people who probably needed the attention (like any of the directors hoping for placement in the Oscar directors category, even without their films hoping for BP
Biggest boost: Innaritu. His film is leading in the nomination tally and it’s fighting for its life for a place in the Oscar shortlist. This helps.

"hell yes!" Scorsese "oh no!" double Eastwood
Best SUPPORTING Actress
Adriana Barraza
Babel Cate Blanchett
Notes on a Scandal Emily Blunt
The Devil Wears Prada Jennifer Hudson
Dreamgirls Rinko Kikuchi
Babel
Post-Show
"What about me? What about what I need? What about what's best for me-eee?" Jennifer Hudson. Next stop: Oscar. P.S. I love that they found a way to honor Emily Blunt too . But boy did they make her sit way the hell in the back. Couldn't they have sat her with Meryl?
Pre-Show Comments
Another no-brainer. This will clearly go to the seasons shiniest new thing: Jennifer Hudson. There's few who would begrudge her the applause and this star-making season she's having including me --I've been rooting for her since the auditions for American Idol. Why stop now?Post Nomination Comments
A solid supporting actress list that I personally could totally live with were it to transfer over to Oscar. The problem is that I fear the most vulnerable is Emily Blunt (The Globes like their comedies more than Oscar voters) even though she’s the best. (keep in mind: haven’t seen Dreamgirls yet. But I hear Jennifer Hudson is the unquestionable lead of the film anyway)Biggest Boost: Blunt. Her first awards season mention. And it’s a biggie! Can the Prada team get a SAG ensemble nod? How great would that be? A little something for the eternally neglected Anne Hathaway.
Snub: Little Miss Sunshine herself, Maggie Gyllenhaal in anything, Catherine O'Hara FYC (if you're counting her in this category)

"hell yes!" Emily Blunt we love you "oh no!" miscast Blanchett
Best SUPPORTING Actor
Ben Affleck
Hollywoodland Eddie Murphy
Dreamgirls Jack Nicholson
The Departed Brad Pitt
Babel Mark Wahlberg
The DepartedPost-Show
Fending off a whole handful of A-listers Eddie Murphy takes the Globe --will Oscar also do this 'his & hers' supporting statues for Dreamgirls? I think so.
Pre-Show Comments
This one is hard to say. They love Jack and Brad so they're obvious possibilities --especially Brad given their overall Babel love. But my best guess is they'll hand Eddie Murphy the Globe for 'his & hers' supporting prizes. Which is, incidentally, what I also think the Oscars will do (my early guess since I don't think Dreamgirls will win Best Picture and they'll want to really reward it elsewhere)Post Nomination Comments
The only thing to say here is really: The Globes sure do love the mega famous. I expect to see at least one less famous name in Oscar's corresponding category though: Arkin and Nighy both have a shot.Biggest boost: Affleck (whose film did a fast fade) and Wahlberg (who has a lot of internal competition)
summing up
"hell yes!" Wahlberg finally gets recognized "oh no!" Jack being Jack (again)
Best SCREENPLAY
Guillermo Arriaga
Babel Todd Fields & Tom Perotta
Babel Patrick Marber
Notes on a Scandal Peter Morgan
The Queen William Monahan
The Departed
My guess was correct: The QueenOscar has two categories for this so expect to see all five of these movies honored again. The Globe win is tough to read but I'm guessing The Queen gets a second Globe here. Alternate: Babel. Longshot: The Departed. The other two should smile about being invited to the party.
Best FOREIGN FILM
Apocalypto
(USA) Letters From Iwo Jima
(USA)The Lives of Others
(Germany) Pan's Labyrinth
(Mexico) Volver
(Spain)Post-Show
They wanted Clint up on stage -- It's as simple as that. So Letters From Iwo Jima won. Too bad though. I worry that Clint and Mel's successes here will prompt a semi-annual mini wave of this kind of filmmaking giving the already American-centric awards system further opportunity to shut out world cinema greats. Apart from The Lives of Others (which I have not yet seen) no one will ever be able to convince me that Volver didn't handily deserve this prize. Letters is a good film don't get me wrong... it's not an awards travesty (other than in the American winning foreign prizes way) --but it don't hold a candle to Volver.
Pre-Show Comments
I think Letters From Iwo Jima MIGHT win here, narrowly edging out Pan's Labyrinth and mmy "should win" Volver. But I don't like the idea. You'd think the foreign press would share my view that American filmmakers shouldn't be dominating foreign categories. But given that the foreign press nominated both Mel Gibson and Clint Eastwood for this prize they obviously don't. Sigh.Post Nomination Comments
I know the Golden Globes have different rules than the Oscars about this category but in this case I prefer the more restrictive Oscar rules. It seems completely unfairthat US filmmakers can hog one of the only categories wherein foreign films can make a PR dent of any sort.Biggest boost: Nothing really.
Biggest losers: everything made outside the US, if US filmmakers can compete in this category too, home team advantage and all.summing up
"hell yes!" PEDRO ALMODOVAR "oh no!" MEL GIBSON
Best ANIMTED FILM
Cars
(Pixar) Happy Feet
(Warner Bros) Monter House
(Sony)Post-Show
Pixar triumps again as Cars takes the prize. I feel so out of the loop on this one. I really do. Both of its competitors are stronger films as are a couple of the non-nominees. Am I missing something with Cars? It's handsomely drawn sure but isn't it 1/2 hour too long and dull as dirt?
Pre-Show Comments
My best guess is Happy Feet wins but Cars wouldn't surprise me. Too bad the best one is in the "i'm just happy I'm nominated" positionPost Nomination Comments
zzzzz. Although I'm thrilled to see Monster House among the three. Remind me again why we have to have animated categories? Shouldn't they be competing in the main categories if they're good enough?
Best ORIGINAL Song
A Fathers Way
(The Pursuit of Happyness) Listen
(Dreamgirls) Never Gonna Break My Faith
(Bobby) The Song of the Heart
(Happy Feet) Try Not To Remember
(Home of the Brave)Post-Show Comments
In the only real upset of the night Prince beets Beyoncé for that song prize. He wins for Happy Feet. Beyoncé must be having a bad month. First she's declared ineligible to win the Oscar for it. Than she loses the Globe. Ouch.
Pre-Show Comments
I'm guessing they'll want a little Beyoncé moment onstage. Listen will win.Post Nomination Comments
I've never understood why the Globes have this caetgory since the only reason Oscar seems to have it is for musical breaks. But the Globes don't do musical numbers. So why?
Best SCORE
Alexandre Desplat
The Painted Veil Clint Mansell
The Fountain Gustavo Santaollala
Babel Carlos Siliotto
Nomad Hans Zimmer
The DaVinci CodePost-Show
So happy that Desplat won. The Painted Veil has a gorgeous gorgeous score.
Pre-Show Comments
So hard to predict music winners so I'll just say Gustavo Santaollala for Babel since they didn't give him the win last year like Oscar.Post Nomination Comments
As exciting as it may be to see Santaollala, Desplat, and Mansell (three of the best and least Oscar recognized composers in the world) in the running for the original score Globe keep in mind that this category is hardly an easy transfer to an Oscar statuette. Oscar’s composing branch is notoriously protective of themselves and slow to let new composers into the club.On the other hand: TOTAL SHOCKER You won’t see John Williams name with Oscar this year. He's not eligible for the first time in many a year. Freed from the tyranny of giving Williams his annual nomination (or two) maybe the Oscar voters will feel frisky and make room for new talents?
