A discussion with Joe Reid from Low Resolution on the Golden Globe Awards honoring the film and television of 2006. [please excuse spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors --this is merely a chat transferred to the page -ed.]
NATHANIEL: worst dressed: agreed on Cameron Diaz. just a mess.
JOE: Ugh. As I said last night: Advantage, Justin.
NATHANIEL: so true. she didn't bring sexyback to those awards
JOE: No. She's taking sexy away. Forever.
NATHANIEL: Best Dressed. I might have to go with Penelope Cruz in Chanel. But i didn't love the hair.
JOE: Huh. I wasn;t crazy about any of it, to tell you the truth. I never think she looks good at awards shows. Too fussy.
NATHANIEL: i'm probably forgetting someone. enlight me. you took notes! cheater
JOE: My top 5: #5: Jada Pinkett Smith No one was wearing that color, and it looked SO good on her. I haven't noticed her in the past few years. I just thought she popped. She was in the background during one damn interview or another, and I was like, "Wooooow."
NATHANIEL: hmmmm. in regards to Jada. I was actually going to bring this up. She's a beautiful woman but every damn year I am hoping she goes a little softer. She's always so severe beautiful but so machinelike in her glamour precision and color force.
i don't know what I'm talking about...but will smith is a lucky man. #4...
JOE: Okay, #4: Kate Winslet.
NATHANIEL: beautiful
JOE: As always. Loved the white, loved the hips, loved it all. Even the RED lipstick, which she can always pull off.
NATHANIEL: yes. at first i was stunned. that's really red for a white dress but agreed.
JOE: #3: Felicity Huffman. GREAT color and a gorgeous dress overall.
NATHANIEL: ewww. i have to say actually that I always think that the Desperate Housewives --all four of them are trying too hard.
JOE: I wasn't crazy about Longoria's dress, didn't see the other two, but I loved Felicity.
#2: Drew Barrymore. Did you see her? I was shocked. Shocked! Never would've pictured her in pink, I never think fake tanner is a good idea, but she pulled it all together gorgeously. The shitty thing is, I haven't seen one photo that flatters her, after the fact, but on the show I thought she was gorgeous.
NATHANIEL: yes. i'm excited for her to have a proper comeback
JOE: Especially after how awful she looked last year?
NATHANIEL: right
JOE: My #1, hands down, check out my blog: Reese Witherspoon. Wow!
NATHANIEL: Malibu Reese = H-O-T
JOE: Scorching hot.
NATHANIEL: and I don't normally think of her as a sex kitten.
JOE: I know, right?
NATHANIEL: she's on the market again obviously
JOE: In a big way. I think she got a few hundred more votes for Little Miss Sunshine wearing that shade of yellow, too.
NATHANIEL: hee
JOE: Okay. Now do we have to talk about the awards?NATHANIEL: if we must. can i please bitch one more time about America winning FOREIGN FILM. it just makes me crazy.
JOE: You know, that's one thing that really doesn't bother me at all.
NATHANIEL: i actually liked Clint's movie more than I was expecting too but i just think this is the only place where foreign directors can get any real and regular air time and you have Americans hogging 40% of the category and one of them winning who wins all the time... it make Nathaniel bonkers
JOE: I actually prefer the Globe method of "foreign language film" to the nationalistic red tape and technicalities of the way the Oscars do it. I just think this was the rare year when two major American directors had horses in the race. That's almost never the case.
NATHANIEL: supporting prizes. Do you think Oscar will also do his & hers for Dreamgirls?
JOE: Yeah, most likely. I'd like to think there's more of a competition in supporting actor, but there's not. And while Hudson's not really at the top of any list of mine (she's about halfway down my LEAD actress top ten, to be honest), I'll be happy enough when she wins. Loved her speech.
NATHANIEL: i have her in "lead" also but i am not through my ranking. it's a nightmare to be quite honest. There's 13 or so women who I'd be happy to have in a best actress list in most years.
the movie studios are just not distributing the wealth in this category. it's all in 2006JOE: Yeah, that's the double-edged sword of a rich year.
NATHANIEL: right. but better too many than too few.
Can we talk for a second about the awesomeness that is Meryl Streep?
JOE: I liked Meryl's plea for wider distribution. Even though I'm more sympathetic to economic concerns than most, if Meryl's for it, so am I.
NATHANIEL: I wish every other actor would pay attention to her speeches. Without fail they hit every mark: a little something for her co-workers. a little something for herself. a little something for everyone whilst never being in the least bit boring. why is this not something that people who are up for awards think to learn? they have teams of stylists. they can't get speech writers?
JOE: I know. Best speeches, non-Streep division?
NATHANIEL: Cohen. Like Streep he also understood that once you win it's no longer about you. it's about entertaining the people watching you
JOE: Yes!NATHANIEL: it's a simple enough concept but most Hollywood people don't get it. probably because they have to stay so self-focused to work. i don't know. maybe i'm just projecting.
JOE: Again, I was worried he'd accept it in character, but he didn't. Blessedly. On the sentimental and emotional tip, loved Forest Whitaker and America Ferrara.
NATHANIEL: i was happy for Forest because I love the performance but i'm not sure the speech did him any Oscar favors. I hate to be so cynical... but all those critical awards aside he's far more vulnerable than Mirren for the actual Oscar and he just didn't pull it together. i could see O'Toole or Smith with their mega wattage charms working the town from now until February and spoiling it for him.
JOE: I can too. I just hope other people found him endearing last night.
NATHANIEL: i did. but i also got a bit impatient when he didn't pull it together. Jennifer Hudsonwas also emotional but she at least kept talking and i love how glammed up she's been.
JOE: She's a fuckin' star. I love it.
NATHANIEL: me too. which is why she's unbeatable. even if you don't think the performance is miraculous (and apparently neither of us do) you still root for her. That's the mark of an unbeatable front runner
JOE: Totally.
Oh about Peter Morgan...
NATHANIEL: great year for him writing The Queen AND The Last King of Scotland. what about him?
JOE: Apparently I got The Queen all wrong, because I watched that movie thinking the English people were fucking wankers for freaking out about Princess Diana so much, just like the Queen did. I thought the film came down firmly on her side. Apparently, he thought it was about bringing the administration down a peg.
NATHANIEL: oh right. wasn't that so weird. it was like he was arguing with himself.
i guess the main question now is who can win Best Picture? Babel has the Globe. Departed has the BFCA.
total mix in critics awards. The Queen seems to still be rising.JOE: Okay, here's where I say I was psyched for Babel. But I actually think the mish-mash of the precursors plays into Dreamgirls' favor.
NATHANIEL: maybe. maybe not
Back to Golden Globes proper...
