NATHANIEL: I could see SAG going to LMS or DEPARTED and that would be a bad sign for Dreamgirls. You need the actors on your side.

JOE: I think as the pre-season favorite, as long as Babel and The Queen and The Departed keep going back and forth, the more it looks like they're battling for second. I think Dreamgirls can win without SAG.

NATHANIEL: well it can but if Departed takes SAG I'd say it wins. just because it also wouldn't be a turnoff choice for the tech people.

JOE: The Departed will always be a threat because Marty is so winning Best Director.

NATHANIEL: I still fear typing that out loud

JOE: I kind of don't anymore. Unless Iwo Jima proves resurgent on nomination morning, who can beat him? Frears? No. Inaritu? No. Dayton/Farris? No. A lone director? No.

NATHANIEL: Oh yeah of course. But it's just been such an annual fuckover that I don't like to hink about the drama continuing for even another second. I'm SO anxious to move on from Clint and Marty and the Oscar,s you know? anyway I'm rooting for The Departed mainly because I like to see different genres get Oscar play -- it gets so boring that they either have to be message movies or biopics or historical epics.

JOE: I'd like to root for The Departed, but I can't. I'm kind of checked out of this year's Oscars, beyond rooting for Forest Whitaker and being happy for Mirren and Hudson. I'll be rooting for Dreamgirls, I think, since the actual merits of Best Picture don't matter to me this year.

NATHANIEL: I don't really LOVE the departed but i like it well enough to root for it. i'd also be happy to see LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE win since it's second place for me (and a close second at that)

JOE: Here's something interesting: I thought for sure with 3 wins and a Best Pic, Dreamgirls would get the important day-after headline, but Variety says "Babel, Brits top Golden Globes."

NATHANIEL: Hmm.

JOE: LMS will be my favorite among the nominees, but I don't think it'll win.

NATHANIEL: I don't think so either but it's fun that it's made it this far.

JOE: I'm glad the LMS backlash has apparently lashed the other way for now. I was worried I'd have to keep defending it all season.

NATHANIEL: Any last words on the GLOBES? any major takeaway beyond what we've already discussed?

JOE: Alec Baldwin is awesome?

NATHANIEL: ha ha

JOE: I guess that doesn't fit in with any kind of "film" experience. Happy for Babel. Like that the Globes aren't so beholden to predicting the Oscars.

NATHANIEL: How about this for a takeaway: Emily Blunt is the new favorite of movie fanatics... even if the mainstream casual moviegoers are Jennifer Hudson crazy

JOE: Emily Blunt HAD BETTER GET A NOMINATION, though I'm starting to wonder who could possibly falter in that race.

NATHANIEL: The only reason I'm still even the least bit hopeful for Blunt is that I imagine she'll get #1 placement on ballots and that helps. People either have her as their personal winner or they don't seem interested in the performance. that's my take on it at least. but GO EMILY!

JOE: Oh God. I always get into trouble trying to parse the "#1 on ballots" thing. But that's probably where Barazza, Breslin, Blanchett are weaker.

NATHANIEL: i know. it's probably better to not think about it --the rankings. it's probably overthinking it. but you know, that's what we awards junkies do.

that's our whole goddamn raison d'etre

JOE: word

NATHANIEL: thanks for joining me for this chat!

JOE: Thanks for having me! Love it! And American Idol starts tonight, wish me luck.
