OSCAR RACE 2006

commentary by Nathaniel R

Oscar Night in Review February 2007

If you care at all about the Oscars, you already know who won. So let’s start with something you didn’t know: Jennifer Hudson’s auspicious show biz beginnings. No, not auditioning for American Idol. Everyone knows about that. No, long before she became a foolishly rejected American Idol or an actual Oscar Winner (!) she was an original cast member of Xanadu! You didn’t know, did you? Well… now you do.

If Hollywood is looking for an historian of such facts I am more than available. These things get lost in the shuffle of our rapidly shifting pop landscape. I am ready and available to document.

JHud eventually took off the Greek disco muse wrap and joined the land of the standardly glamorous for Hollywood's High Holy Night, the Oscars. [Also known as "Nathaniel's New Years Eve" --now I can get on with 2007. Finally] But Jennifer Hudson didn’t make my best or worst dressed list. With or without the Xanadont flourishes.

So here we go...

Worst Dressed
I didn't understand what Anne Hathaway was doing with some sort of butterlfy silhouette black on top of white. It's kind of vest like isn't it? It's definitley fugly. Most inexplicable of all would be Naomi Watts' decision to raid Cate Blanchett's closet for her February 2005 Oscar winning dress. And she looked droopy in it, like it didn't fit. I'd rather not talk about (or look at) Isla Fisher's dress or how fake it makes her breasts look. Moving on. Jennifer Lopez is, as always, beautiful but she’s stuck in this empire waist fashion rut from which I suspect she will never return It’s her version of Goldie Hawn’s eternal long-banged hairdo I guess. Kelly Preston is a fixture at these events by way of (un)holy matrimony but leopard print? At the Oscars. The Kodak theater is like 300 miles away from Vegas, isn't it?

Most Beautiful Men
The men cleaned up especially well last night with only a few people including (arguably) Clive Owen and the eternally schlubby Phillip Seymour Hoffman going for the 'I can't be bothered' look.

Daniel Craig, Ken Watanabe and Mark Wahlberg all looked very Oscarable but I was especially impressed by Keith Robinson (Dreamgirls C.C. White) Hugh Jackman (being paired with Penelope Cruz didn't hurt his look either) and George Clooney who gets my vote for Best Dressed Man. He's now perfected his classic male movie star old school look.

Best Dressed
Kate/Cate are still great. Blanchett's is a bit more daring but Winslet's gown is picture perfect with a gorgeous and unusual color choice. It's so becoming. I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed this but it’s the media likes to give “best dressed” awards to actual Oscar winners --I guess that gold statue heightends their glamour quotient even if their dress is dull. In this case any best dressed lists Helen Mirren lands on will be deserved. She looked as sensational as ever: radiant, happy, sexy, confident. In short: yummy. Penelope Cruz was also to die for in an elaborately textured but beautifully monochromatic gown. Maggie Gyllenhaal was tightly sheathed and the lines were very flattering with perfect hair and makeup choices were flawless.
