Should Win: Though Alexandre Desplat is probably my favorite current film composer The Queen isn’t even his best work this year. So I’m going to have to say Navarrete’s Pan’s Labyrinth is the score that I found most beautiful and affecting here. I'd also be pleased with a first win for Newman
Will Win: This is a tough call. Newman has never won but he might have to wait even longer. They sometimes throw a bone to a foreign film in this category so it could easily be Pan’s Labyrinth. The Queen is a likely choice but I'm gonna guess Pan's, primarily for that memorable lullaby / theme. EDITED TO ADD: So Babel actually took this despite having the least (quantitatively speaking)original music.
I’m Surprised it Wasn’t Disqualified: Babel’s music was strong but very little of it was actually an original score. I’m surprised it was deemed eligible for a nomination.
Snubbed: Desplat’s best score this year (The Painted Veil) and Clint Mansell’s work on The Fountain are the most disappointing omissions. My ballot is here.

Original Song
Cars
Dreamgirls
Dreamgirls
Dreamgirls
An Inconvenient Truth
“Our Town”
“Listen”
“Love You I Do”
“Patience”
“I Need to Wake Up”

Should Win: I’ve always loved Melissa Etheridge and I think her power anthem “I Need To Wake Up” is a terrific straightforward match for the movie that houses it.
Will Win: It’s probably stupid to bet against Dreamgirls since it’s a musical. Technically Beyonce won’t be winning the Oscar for "Listen" even if it's their choice but the Oscars have shown love to the diva before (remember that year when she inexplicably sang nearly every song nominated. What the hell was that about?) so that could sway them toward her anachronistic second act signature song. But I’m gonna allow my wishful thinking to color my judgment here (since I think it'll be close) and say they’ll rock out with Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up" instead.

EDITED TO ADD: Melissa Etheridge is now an Oscar winner. Yay!

My ballot is here.

Sound Mixing
Should Win: I’ll admit upfront that I don’t know much about sound mixing. I’m going to study up so I make more informed choices in the future because Nick (who has a great ear) tells me in the symposium that Dreamgirls shouldn’t be here at all though it was my uninformed choice. The Symposium participants in general went for Apocalypto.
Will Win: And Apocalypto could take it if enough voters want to reward the Susan Lucci of Oscar, Kevin O'Connell. His work on the Mel Gibson chase film earned him a 19th nomination. He has yet to win. But I’m guessing this is an easy get for Dreamgirls (which also won the Cinema Audio Society award) because even if Nick is correct, I'm guessing most actors and costume designers and producers and everyone else in the Academy who votes on this, are as uninformed as I am (which might be why musicals often win here. Musicals = Sound)
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Dreamgirls
Flags of Our Fathers
Pirates of ...

Sound Editing

Should / Will Win: I’m thinking this goes to Pirates of the Caribbean with ease. The winner of this category is usually big, loud, and actioney (see also: King Kong, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Master and Commander, Pearl Harbor, The Incredibles, The Matrix, etc…)

EDITED TO ADD: This is where Oscar voters rewarded Letters From Iwo Jima, making 2006 a semi-rare year in which all Best Picture nominees won something.

Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters From Iwo Jima
Pirates of ...
