The following list was compiled in September 2005 using a complex mathematical formula [snort] involving number of films, clarity of obsession, quality of work, and other *undefinables* that influence the way this film fanatic sees them even though the list is meant to be about 2000 through summer 2005 only (*undefinables such as previous filmographies and other extracurricular influences like awards show appearances, publicity persona, and in some cases tv & stagework)
I love lists. You didn't know that about me, did'ja? So, here comes another one. [Applause] In order to not be entirely overwhelmed when it comes times for the Greatest of the Decade lists in 2010 (Hey, don't knock me for not planning ahead) I've started my actor spreadsheets early...This upcoming list is unlikely to match what I'll feel in 2010. But I thought it might be an interesting capsule in 5 years time. In less than 1825 days some of the women named in the following list may well go the way of Natasha Lyonne (sorry --low blow. But it's Hollywood and it happens), some may suddenly retire just as they're heating up again (a la Pfeiffer) sending them plummeting. Some may become superstars (if they aren't already) and some who look particularly ascendant and shimmery now may have already peaked (unbeknownst to us in September of 2005).
The following list is my view of the most valuable players of the Aughts (Based on the 500ish films I've seen from this decades' releases so far). It is not intended to reflect anything other than movies I saw from 2000 through mid-2005 --so don't freak if my goddesses are not #1. This is NOT an "all time" list.)
I love more than 100 actresses and some people on this list I don't love at all anymore but I can't really discount that I did for a year or two. (If you read this site frequently you probably already know who)
If someone you think is great is not listed it might be because:
1. They just haven't done enoughwork yet (Amy Adams, Oksana Akinsha, Jane Krakowski, etc...)
2. They spent too little time on screen in favor of TV (Ambrose, Dushku, Redgrave, SJP, etc...)
3. They haven't appeared in enough movies i wanted to see or was able to get to even if I generally dig them (Gershon, Tilly, Kristin Scott Thomas, some foreign stars, etc...)
4. They've been sitting this decade out for the most part (Li, Streisand, Tomlin, Christie, Yeoh, Ryder, among many others) On this last part. I have to ask in all seriousness: What do movie stars do when they're not making movies for 4 years at a time? Inquiring minds what to know
5. The love is fading because the work just aint what it used to be (Ricci, Bonham-Carter, etc...)
6. I just don't really love them enough even if i like 'em just fine (Paquin, Dench, etc...)
7. I just don't like them at. all. (Swank, Stiles, Cruz, Wright-Penn, etc...)
And now ... my rough overview of the 100 women who made 1000 of my hours this decade extra pleasureable. (For the very list-hungry check out the 90s list if you haven't already)
