6 Nathaniel's birthday. Buy me something. I deserve gifts! Other
people celebrating birthdays include yummy Brit actor Jason Isaacs who
turns 42. He specializes in villians and you'll soon see him as Lucius
Malfoy in the next installment of the Harry Potter series.
I also share this birthday with the inimitable Sandra Bernhard, one of my idols, who turns 50. Rent King of Comedy in to see her blazing debut. Great -one of Scorsese's very best |
7 Speaking of Oscar, on this day last year the eventural winner Million Dollar Baby started filming. Will their be a late-start entry for 05? What? |
8 This day also marks the 53rd anniversary of the marriage of Judy Garland to Sidney Luft. It was her third of five marriages and the longest lasting. |
9 Happy
birthday to everyone's favorite movie pirate, Johnny Depp, who turns
42 today. Have a mini-Depp festival. Watch Cry-Baby, Donnie Brasco,
and What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Marvel at his range. Also celebrating a birthday today is Depp's tag-along Freddie Highmore, his Neverland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory co-star who turns 13. |
10 It's
been 83 years since the gods of cinema gave the world one of their most
precious gifts; that little girl with the big big voice, Frances Gumm.
More famously known as Judy Garland.
Celebrate this day watching one of her best performances, try
Meet Me in St. Louis or A Star is Born.Opening today: Mr. & Mrs. Smith, starring the very lusty combo of Pitt & Jolie. So much eye candy the quality is probably irrelevant. |
11 57 years ago American audiences got a dual fix of the two greatest musical film stars ever, Judy G and Gene Kelly who co-starred in 1948's The Pirate which opened today (er, 57 years ago today) across the country. On this day in 1979 John Wayne, one of the giants of movie stardom, died. Now, I never understood what the fuss was about with ole' Wayne. But you definitely have to see Red River where he squares off memorably with the ridiculously beautiful Monty Clift. |

| 19 Father's Day My dad doesn't like to go to the movies. Once every 10 years or so he likes a movie. I remember him digging The Gods Must Be Crazy (84) and Titanic (97). Happy Day anyway to my cinema averse daddy! Happy 38th birthday to the ex Mrs. Jude Law, Sadie Frost. Take heart: You are still way cooler than Sierra Miller! Also brithday wishes to 21st birthday to L.I.E. star Paul Dano. |
20 ![]() Director Stephen Frears celebrates his 64th today. Wish him a great year by watching his best film. I'll let you decide which holds the title: The Grifters, Dangerous Liaisons, or My Beautiful Laundrette 80s character-actor/star Danny Aiello (he played Madonna's pop in her famous "Papa Don't Preach" video) turns 72. Watch his Oscar nominated work in Spike Lee's excellent 89 classic Do the Right Thing. |

22 36
years ago today Judy Garland died of an overdose. She was 47 years old.
Watch her last film I Could Go on Singing today. She's great
in it. No surprise. A couple of the concert sequences are total knockouts
as well. From mourning to celebration. This day also marks the birth 56 years ago of one of the other Great movie stars Mary Lousie Streep. You know her as Meryl. |

27 The 36th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots today. The funeral of Judy Garland on this very day had the gay community in mourning and on edge. The police riots on this night, a regular occurence prior, were suddenly met with rage and a new era in queer civil rights was born. Whether or not a drunken drag queen actually yelled out "This one's for Judy" as they threw the first bottle at the police is up for debate. |
